What the…?

I’m a scuba diver, fisherman, filmmaker, underwater photographer and half-assed marine scientist (as in I went to school for it, but only use that education to help me understand what real scientists are talking about so I can write scripts and stories about their work).

I decided to combine that experience and rig a camera to watch what the critters are doing underwater while I’m fishing, specifically crabbing. Who would want to watch that? Well, turns out I do.

It’s flippin’ fascinating. Will anyone else watch? Maybe… If you’re into crabbing or underwater stuff or cool animal behaviors I think you will. And hell, tons of folks are watching people crinkle paper and eat pasta, so why not watch something that’s actually interesting.

So, I’m going to do a series of “drops” where I lower the camera system in crab traps, some to test new baits and areas, others just to watch the secret lives of underwater critters. I’ll then cut them into digestible chunks of video and turn a mic on and narrate what I’m seeing in real time. This will not at all be like my “work” work where I have to be scientifically accurate. This is for fun, so I’ll be winging it and will feel free to speculate about what we’re seeing. If it feels right, I’ll also add some short clips of natural behaviors I’ve filmed while scuba diving.

I’ll also feel free to add some flavor to whatever I think the crabs might be thinking or saying… and maybe try to do it in whatever I think their voices sound like. Because. Yeah.
